Printer Hardware and Software
One of the places that the Office HERO 6.1 stands out as different from the more consumer driven HERO 9.1, is the control panel. Forgoing the fancy touch screen, the Office HERO 6.1 offers users a 2.4-inch LCD and actual buttons. You’ll find four main device keys for copy, scan fax and photo as well as a four directional navigation wheel, alphanumeric keypad and nine quick keys.

The Office HERO 6.1 comes with the AIO Home Center software, one of my favorite programs because it’s so simple to use with a well laid out navigation, interesting add-ons and linkage to useful “outside” information. And the color scheme is quite pleasing, a black and red motif with a hint of yellow.
What’s interesting is that Kodak includes the same AIO Home Center with both their Photo AIOs and their Office AIOs so you’ll really get the same experience with the basic layout of traditional photo printing, photo stills from video, 3D photos, scan documents and picture, home center tools and documentation, printer tools, create photo cards, tips & projects center, ordering supplies and a Cloud Printing Setup section.
And that’s really what makes the Office HERO 6.1 unique. Many manufacturers will cut their losses with photo printing on office models; I mean it won’t be terrible but there is no emphasis on it. But with the Office HERO 6.1, users can print a variety of photos using the three photo applications as well as print from memory cards and a front side USB port on the device itself.
Starting with the traditional photo printing, you’ll pick and choose photos from the hard drive, edit them using Kodak’s one-button edits or custom solutions, and then select how you’d like to “finish” them. Finishing includes: print to your AIO, save the photos to file, email using your default (likely Microsoft Outlook if you have a PC) email service, open using other programs, send them to a Kodak Gallery account or send items to Google Docs. Users can also link outside photo galleries to the AIO Home Center through the home center tools section.
With the video print option, print stills from video saved on the hard drive. The software supports a variety of media including: .mov, .avi and .mp4 video file types, H264, mpeg1 and motion jpeg codecs, and both standard and HD resolutions. Kodak also added support for H264 encoded video. Users have to “unlock” this feature by downloading an installer from Kodak’s website.
As with all the new ESP and HERO printers, you can print 3D photos. To accomplish this, you will need to take “picture pairs” which Kodak outlines in the 3D photo printing section. According to Kodak, users will: “take one picture, then move camera 3 in. /75 mm to the right; within 20 seconds, take the same picture without changing the angle of the camera.”
We tested the 3D printout during the HERO 9.1 review and I used the same photos for the Office HERO 6.1 to see if there was any difference in quality. Below are the scanned in results which includes a normal photo and the 3D photo printed by the Office HERO 6.1.
Using the scan software is similar to using the traditional photo software. Select your media – be it a photo, document, etc. you want to scan – and hit next (or preview the scan). The Office HERO 6.1 will scan in the image(s) and automatically scan multiple images or documents on the flatbed as individual files unless the user checks the collage button. The edit options are identical. Once you finish editing, you’ll be taken to the final Finish page where you can select to print, save or email your scan.
The Office HERO 6.1 offers double sided scanning, copying and faxing through the ADF which is an excellent feature considering this printer is less than $200.
We did our usual test to make sure the fax works by sending and receiving a fax and we found it worked successfully.
As always, users can adjust print settings using the print properties menu found in your browser or word processors print menu.
